EDLD 5326: Action Research Project Progress

The vision of my action research plan was communicated to the staff during a faculty meeting. Many teachers did not realize that Promethean Boards and Activotes could enhance students’ learning. At the start of this project I had all kinds of dead ends and I was very stressed out! Many nights I wanted to change my topic, but my site-mentor and IA encouraged me not to because they felt the topic was great. They both stated how beneficial this research would be to all school leaders, educators, and parents. I am currently at a new school and was given the ok to look over the grades from last school year because teachers taught without any technology the first nine weeks. I am currently looking over the first and second nine weeks grades and making a data chart to show how students performed with and without technology. I like that my research has gone in this direction because I didn’t want students to change their every day studying routine because the results would not come out right. At the end of the research process, I will hand out surveys for students to give feedback on what delivery instruction they liked the best. I will communicate the results to students, parents, and the community when the research is completed. I am very excited to say that my action research plan is almost finish and I cannot wait to present my results. My site supervisor, Mrs. Bass, has been very helpful in assisting me with my project and is also very excited about the completion of my action research plan.

EDLD 5366 Week 5 Course-Embedded Reflections

          Throughout this course, I have learned and gained much knowledge through the hands-on assignments. Before entering this course, I knew that I would most likely have to design a website and I was excited to do so in week 4, as a group project. From this assignment I learned the real meaning of collaboration! Yes, I have done group assignments before, but this project was different. To be successful in designing this website, everybody in the group had to understand and implement the four basic principles of design, C.R.A.P, for our page (Williams). In the past, I thought that websites and posters should have order in the design. I never knew that this order was called C.R.A.P, the four basic principles of design. Prior knowledge and new information helped me to better understand how to execute this assignment. By having some background knowledge in design, I believe that this experience was great and not overwhelming as I previously thought before entering this course.

            The strategies that I employed in completing this assignment were very simple. I knew that for our website to be a success, as a group we would need to plan ahead and work together as a team. In addition, we also had to design a logo for the website. This task was tricky because the logo had to represent all group members. In week two, we learned about self-branding. The Art of Self Branding stated that you must ask yourself, “Who are you?”(Alcantra 2009).  Our logo became easier to design because we were all educators and our motto was “Teach Because We Care”. I believe that my group worked well together and it showed through our website. I have always thought of myself as a visual and tactile learner, and this assignment has proven this. This course provided many examples of completed websites and logos, through web conferences and wikis, which made this overwhelming assignment easier to complete. The interaction between colleagues was great because everyone was willing to share and collaborate with one another.

          From this group project I learned that to be successful in a group assignment everyone in the group must be willing to collaborate. When I entered this course, I did not have an idea on how to create or design a website. I noticed, in the reading section of week four that there was a YouTube video that gave step-by-step instructions on creating and editing a website. I was thrilled because I am a visual learner. Once I reviewed this video I was ready and excited to create the group website. I am so pleased that we planned ahead for this website since we did have some problems with the first website we created and had to start all over, but it was well worth it! I believe that my colleagues and I will continue to collaborate and grow together throughout this program.  In the future, I would like to research “Is having a class website beneficial for students and parents?” I believe that this is a great action research question because not all schools implement class websites. If the research is proven true, I think that all schools should begin to implement class websites in all grades.

A teacher could implement the use of websites into PK-12 classrooms in various ways. One way that a teacher could implement websites into a classroom is by having it as a learning center. My technology center is set up in this manner. When students rotate to the technology center, they automatically know to go to my blackboard site and click on the correct assignment they will have to complete. This method is catered to all grade-levels and is very simple to implement. Another way to implement websites into classrooms is to let your students complete group projects.  For example, you are working on a unit in social studies that has to do with the different regions; students could work and collaborate on this project together. This approach would cater to the upper grade-levels because it would be more challenging to complete. Implementing websites could be a simple and easy way that teachers can begin to integrate technology into the curriculum.

EDLD 5366 Assignment 1.2 Ancient Manuscript Reflection

I chose to investigate Baybars’ magnificent Qur’an for this assignment. My first impression of this manuscript was how beautiful the colors were throughout the book. The manuscript incorporated warm and cool colors. Contrast is shown be having the important information highlighted with a reddish color. Repetition is shown by repeating the same geometric shapes and style of writing. The pages that were side-by-side were aligned having the same right and left margins, and they also had the same number of lines. Proximity is shown by having liked information grouped together. The artist used calligraphy and geometric shapes to help us understand the importance of this manuscript.

I attended the web conference on Saturday December 3, 2011 at 10:00 am. I wanted to attend this conference because I didn’t understand how to complete the shot-list for week 3 assignment. After, Dr. Abernathy explained the shot-list I was able to complete it and send it to my group members. One of my peers also stated that every time the camera changes position; it was considered a different shot. Dr. Abernathy explained the importance of everyone working together to complete this assignment and said that each group should have a Google document that showed their collaboration. She also stressed that we should shared this document with our instructional associates. She made it clear that our PSA should only be 60 seconds and the credits should be at least 10 seconds long. At the end of the web conference Dr. Abernathy told us that she would add two more conferences on December 5 and December 6. She then asked, if we had any more questions and then gave out her email and phone number again.

EDLD 5363 Week 3 Reflections

In week 3, I believe the assignment was less stressful because we were all familiar with creating videos and using different editing software programs. I have never been asked to accomplish any task like this before, and was very excited when I read week three's overview. The course, Multimedia and Video Technology, has given me the opportunity to accomplish tasks I have never done before. From the past three weeks, I have learned so much about technology. In week 1 I created a personal digital story, in week 2 I created a tutorial about an editing software program, and in week 3 I learned the steps on how to film a PSA. I have also learned how to incorporate technology into my lessons. For example, I now know that my students can create, fun and exciting, videos to go along with the concepts they are learning. My group was able to work together and come up with an excellect PSA topic “Why Recycle”. I was very happy that we were able to collaborate as a group to complete our pre-production plans to our PSA assignment. I can’t wait until our PSA is finished. I know it will be awesome!
